I wanted to write this post to share with you a little bit of how my ‘at home’ newborn sessions work. I have had the privilege of meeting some beautiful brand new babies in the last few months whose images will be sprinkled throughout this post.
It can be a daunting prospect thinking about leaving the house just a few days after giving birth so my ‘at home’ newborn sessions allow you the pleasure of relaxing in your own surroundings with a cup of tea, in your jammies if you wish, whilst I work around you.
I have been trained by some of the best newborn photographers in the country and your baby’s safety is of my utmost priority. I would never attempt any poses that would put your baby at risk. In fact I prefer the simple and more natural poses which do not put your newborn at any risk at all.
The best time to book your newborn session is just after your 12 or 20 week scan to ensure availability. If you choose to book a newborn session it is always best done within the first 4-10 days of your baby being born. This is because your baby is usually very sleepy and will settle into a deep sleep for a couple of hours which will allow us the time we need to create some beautiful imagery. Do not worry if your baby decides not to sleep. I can still create wonderful images of your baby wide awake.
When I arrive on the day of your shoot, I will ask you to show me the rooms in your house with the best natural light. This is often the living area and a master bedroom. I am looking for large windows which will produce soft natural light.
On the day of your newborn shoot I will bring with me everything that I need. All I need from you is a large window and a toasty warm room. I supply a selection of blankets, small headbands and hats for you to choose from. If you have something special you would like to be included in your images please just mention it to me. It may be a shawl or quilt that has been passed down through the generations, or a special keepsake gift.
Sessions can often take 2-3 hours with much of that time spent feeding and settling your baby. I am entirely led by your baby and will not rush the session.
My approach during your session is to shoot a mixture of beautifully posed images of your baby alongside some more ‘lifestyle’ shots. The lifestyle shots are natural images of you interacting with your new baby and older siblings. For these shots we may use either your living room sofa or your bedroom and if you have one, the baby’s nursery.
On my list of ‘must have’ shots are your baby’s perfect features. They grown into chubby babies so quickly that all the tiny details of wrinkly feet, cherub lips, and even hairy ears are gone in a matter of weeks. So I just love to capture these details for you to remember forever.
After the shoot is complete I will choose the very best of your images, edit and retouch them to perfection. So don’t worry if your newborn has little scratches on her face, or a few milk spots or even flaky skin. I will take care of all that in post production.
Around 2 weeks later I will come to your home at a mutually convenient time to present your images in a slideshow and help you choose what prints and products you would like to display. I have many options from Fine Art Leather Bound Albums to Linen Folio Boxes to modern Wall Art for your home or nursery.
How I wish that this type of photography was available for me when I had my babies!
